A couple of years back, we tested a luxury German sedan costing around $50K, followed by the same-size Sentra. It was eye-opening. We liked the Sentra more in practically every possible way. The interior was more practical, the seats more comfortable, and we even preferred the drive of the Sentra. All of this and it was half the price.
Coming away from our Civic Hybrid First Drive, we think this model just might be the sweet spot of the lineup. Not only does it deliver impressive fuel economy, but it's also quick and responsive whether darting through traffic or navigating through turns. Although not as athletic Campeón sportier Civics, it clearly knows how to have fun.
Good performance, efficient fuel economy, and plenty of interior space make the Honda Civic a fine choice. Most versions come with a sprightly 1.7-liter four-cylinder; the uplevel EX trim makes a bit more power and returns 29 mpg overall. Hybrid versions get 36 mpg overall, but they're slower than the regular Civic and have suffered hybrid battery failures.

Honda's smallest hybrid delivers big time. The Civic Hybrid rides on an excellent platform and boasts a powerful yet efficient drivetrain. Unfortunately, it’s reserved for the Civic’s most expensive trim levels.
Honda also includes two years or 24K miles of maintenance. The Civic Hybrid is one of the least expensive vehicles to run that one can buy in our area of the country.
All Civics offer great value. However, if we were shopping, we’d lean toward the hatchback body for its better cargo volume and the hybrid powertrain for its better performance, driving satisfaction, and cost of ownership.
